Thagaste is situated in the centre of the vibrant, lively city of Ghent. The international Lonely Planet guide describes Ghent as one of the European secrets to be discovered.

It is only a five-minute walk from the monastery to the historic centre of the city. There, you can find many historic and medieval buildings, such as the Counts Castel, the Cathedral, the Belfry, St. Nicolas’s Church or the historic houses along the Graslei. These are just a few of the monuments you can discover in Ghent.

Ghent is also a great place to shop. The centre is car-free and offers a variety of picturesque terraces where you can enjoy a drink or a delicious snack. Don’t forget to discover some of the gastronomic highlights, such as the Flemish Foodies (Volta, Publiek, J.E.F., De Vitrine, etc.).

Cultural activities are a way of life in Ghent. There are several internationally recognised museums, and of course you do not want to miss the Van Eyck masterpiece “The adoration of the Mystic Lamb”. You can find this masterpiece in the Cathedral. If you like modern art, you definitely need to visit the SMAK museum with art by Jan Hoet, known in Flanders as the Pope of Modern Art. Music lovers should definitely go to the Opera or attend one of the many concerts in town; from techno to classic, you will find it all in Ghent.

Ghent is also known for its rich theatre life. NTG, Arca, Tinnenpot, Capitole, and the Minardschouwburg are a few of the most renowned theatres. Ghent is also naturally the city of puppeteers, with well-known names such as Pedrolino and Pierke.

"Ghent is one of Europe's greatest discoveries - small enough to feel cosy but big enough to stay vibrant."

We can’t forget the famous Ghent Festival! During the week of the 21st of July, the whole city parties from dawn to dusk. On every square, on every corner, in all the streets and every district, you will find something to discover. Even the Augustinian monastery participates in this very special event visited by more than a million people.

Make sure to save the date in 2016 because the unique Floralies flower exhibition will be returning this year. It promises to be a very special edition and is being held for the first time since 2010. The Light Festival is scheduled for 2018, which is another great event bringing people from all around the world to Ghent.
